Finnish distance sales approaching €10 billion mark

In the period from January to June 2010, Finnish e-shoppers bought products and services for a total value of €4.8 billion.

E-sales forecasts for the year 2010 are hence approaching the €10 billion mark. Foreign e-commerce accounts for 16% in Finland, but this percentage varies according to the by product bought. Sporting equipment ranks highest when it comes to cross-border trade. 46% of sporting equipment is purchased from abroad, followed by 39% of computer programmes, 37% of specialty hobby products, 35% of books and 30% of computer games, music and movies. The tendency to shop cross-border also depends on the e-shoppers age, the under 40’s age group being the most incline to shop from foreign sites.

The above figures stem from the Direct Marketing Association ASML & Federal Trade TNS Gallup joint nationwide e-commerce tracking survey. This recently launched ‘Catalog Statistics’ survey will be carried out on a quarterly basis and is based on interviews with consumers. A total of 30 e-commerce categories will be monitored divided up into 63 subcategories. Finnish e-commerce figures will be published twice a year. All figures include VAT.
